Pryzm's spotlight projects

Oahu, Hawaii

Skilled project managemet services: The City and County of Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) contracted Pryzm to perform the design and preparation of plans, specifications, cost estimates and permits for the exterior renovations and repair of the Public Service Building with an estimated construction cost of $3.5 million. Marisol is the Project Manager for this design project, which includes repaving of parking lots to solve ponding situations, creating a walkway through the parking lot with accessible curb ramps and access routes, performing necessary repairs on the catwalk, repairing fountain to meet building code and providing new filtration system, and replacing all light fixtures with energy efficient fixtures. In addition, Pryzm’s services include testing for hazardous materials and the preparation of hazardous material removal plans and specifications should hazardous materials be encountered during demolition and construction work.

The famous Pryzm SiteWalk: Our goal is to know your site better than you! Marisol, accompanied by Gary and Gavin, walked the entire project site (twice!) for the design of 5,520 feet of replacement water line and appurtenances in Hawaii Kai. The project was conducted for the Board of Water Supply (BWS) and is only one of a dozen BWS distribution and transmission main projects successfully managed by Marisol. The project is currently under construction with an estimated construction cost of $4.7 million.

Kauai, Hawaii

Cost effective alternatives. Gary managed the preliminary and final design for the construction of a new Kaumualii Highway (Route 50) bridge across the Hanapepe river, replacing the original bridge built in 1938. Construction required a temporary bridge and temporary relocation of water, sewer, and electrical utilities. The scope included, roadway alignments, construction phasing, vehicle tracking analysis, sewer lift station evaluation, sewer hydraulic analysis, design of pipe supports, and agency approvals. The design for the U.S. Department of Transportation was completed in 2019, with an estimated construction cost of $45 million.

Mililani Tech Park Phase II, Oahu, Hawaii

Quick 60-day turn-around: Kayla was the managing person for the engineering and environmental due diligence of nearly 250 acres of forested land in Central Oahu with an estimated construction cost of $55 million for the Hawaii Technology Development Corporation (HTDC). The report was finished in 2017. Kayla, Gary, and Kai took former HTDC CEO Robbie Melton off-roading, which was the most fun she has had on project since she took the job.

Consistent and clear communication was the key to keeping this environmental and land use permitting project on-time and within budget. Kayla was the gate keeper for the Hawaii Environmental Policy Act (HEPA) Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and land use permits, responsible for delegating information and tasks to the client, twelve consultants, legal counsel, and approving agencies. As a result of this excellent coordination, the EIS was approved in 2020.

Maui, Hawaii

Boots on the ground: Armchair engineering might be good enough for some, but not for us. For this water system assessment and upgrade project, Project Manager Gary physically located the entire length of the 7,650 LF, steel water line using magnetic locating and GPS equipment. Armed with this knowledge, he was able to assess the condition of the water system, identify and prioritize improvements that could be funded through the Department of Health Small Systems Drinking Water Revolving Loan Fund, and design a replacement HDPE line with an estimated construction cost of $1 million.

Pago Pago, American Samoa

The goal: a more sustainable water source for the Ifitoto community in Faga’alu Village and backup emergency water for the LBJ Tropical Medical Center. The solution: the American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA) hired Pryzm to perform a feasibility study to determine if the Faga’alu stream, or any of the reservoirs along its length, could be used as a source of fresh surface water. Gary developed a preliminary engineering report (PER) with clear recommendations and opinions of cost and schedule. The PER was submitted in 2019 with an estimated construction cost of $3 million.

Yap, Federated States of Micronesia

The unrelenting virus and the unstoppable Pryzm. Pryzm was tasked with preparing an Engineering Assessment Report to replace the existing Yap State Public Service Corporation (YSPSC) water and wastewater treatment plants for an estimated construction cost of $10 million. The original plan for an extensive team site visit and large stakeholder charrette had to be quickly shelved due to a complete travel ban on the island due to COVID19. So, what to do? We deputized Yap PMO and YSPSC staff to obtain photographs, videos, measurements and even drone footage that we could analyze back in our office in Hawaii. Where we needed additional water quality data, Pryzm sent easy-to-use analytical and data-logging equipment to Yap and conducted a series of online trainings with island staff. The end result? A much closer working relationship with an appreciative client who now have better tools for analyzing and managing their water and wastewater systems.

Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia

Simply sustainable: When the Pohnpei Program Management Office (PMO) sought to replace their existing, dilapidated mental health building with a modern, two-story medical facility, Pryzm was the firm they trusted to get the job done. Led by Marisol, Pryzm designed site improvements, in addition to the architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection requirements of the facility. With the owner’s directive to “keep it simple”, the $4.1 million facility is designed for easy operations and maintenance and to withstand the corrosive salt-air environment and extreme weather events.

Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia

Piping with extended life, lower maintenance, and greater reliability: Marisol managed the design of new fuel pipelines for the Chuuk Terminal Facility in Weno for Vital FSM Petroleum Corporation, including valves, connections to existing fuel storage tanks, connection to fuel transfer pumps, new pipe supports, and system equipment for complete operational fuel transfer, and processing systems. This straightforward design project was completed in 2019 with an estimated construction cost of $0.5 million.

Majuro, Republic of Marshall Islands

Engaging stakeholders for project success: Kai was in charge of the program development of the new headquarters for the Marshalls Energy Company (MEC). The Pryzm team facilitated an on-island charrette, a workshop with project stakeholders, to develop a space plan and identify major site elements. The programming report provided MEC with a feasibility opinion and options for developing the new building. Budgets for design and construction were identified and predicted to be within 15% of the actual cost. The project was concluded in 2019 with an estimated construction cost of $5 million.

Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands

Design in record breaking time: The Educational Cultural Center (ECC) gymnasium is the centerpiece of the 2022 Micronesian Games, which makes the design and construction of the facility a top priority for the RMI Government. With an estimated construction cost of $2 million, Pryzm is tasked with replacing the existing roof, rehabilitating the building interior and exterior, and modernizing the athletic facilities. The project phases are taken on by Kai, Marisol, and Gavin together to expedite the project’s development and cross the finish line before the July 2022 games.

Republic of the Marshall Islands

Improved quality of life for students and faculty, plus increased safety and security. Gavin is the Project Manager for the design of a new $7 million, 400-student activity center, cafeteria, and place of safety on Jaluit Atoll. He oversees Pryzm staff and subconsultants to provide full planning, architectural and engineering design services (interior architect, landscape architect, civil, structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection), contractor procurement assistance, and services during construction for the RMI Government. Pryzm utilizes standard design and construction practices, modified to suit the impacts of the remote location, where access is limited to ocean vessels only.

Ebeye, Republic of Marshall Islands

Time- and cost-savings: As the Senior Program Manager, Pat reviewed the project design for the Ebeye water and sanitation for errors, omissions, and deficiencies for the Kwajalein Atoll Joint Utilities Resources (KAJUR). The ITR allowed the client to identify and correct design and contracting deficiencies in subsequent phases of the project and resulted in both time and cost savings. The ITR was based upon the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) ITR guide and modified for application to this project, which concluded in 2018 with an estimated construction cost of $19 million.

Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands

Combined expertise and collaboration: Kai managed the 400+ page U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) loan application for the Republic of the Marshall Islands Ports Authority (RMIPA) with requirements ranging from a preliminary architectural feasibility report, to financial projections, and a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental review. This beast of a project required the expertise of the entire Pryzm team. Completed in 2018 with an estimated construction cost of $40 million.
